When Lobbying was Illegal

I like the Founding Fathers’ interpretation of lobbying: It’s not “free speech” if that “speech” consists of gifts, contributions, or other favors used to personally influence lawmakers. Let’s bring back that concept!

Although lobbyists’ influence seems inevitable, in the 1800s, several states banned lobbying outright.
