Sharing Netflix or HBO Go Passwords Is Technically Federal Crime

The CFAA is a heinous, hastily-written piece of legislation passed during a panic over new technology thirty years ago. Meanwhile, it just made unwitting federal criminals out of many thousands of Americans while Hollywood applauds.

A court ruling last week now means that the act of using someone else’s password to access an online service — including Netflix or HBO Go — is a violation of federal computer laws.
