B.F.I. Unearths Lost Episodes of Pre-‘Python’ Comedy

And now for something completely different….

It’s always a cause for celebration when episodes of a long-lost TV series suddenly come to light. It was when those missing 1960s Doctor Who adventures were discovered a couple of years ago and it is now, as the British Film Institute announces that it has found two missing episodes of At Last the 1948 Show from 1967.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail was at the centre of my sensibilities for much of my adolescence, and became one of those defining pieces that has stuck with me throughout the years. One of the highlights of my adult life is the opportunity to have watched it on the big screen, surrounded by Python fans, in a one-night-only engagement.

The budget was small — about $400,000, half of it supplied by rock stars, including Genesis and Pink Floyd. On the first day of filming in Scotland — the first shot, in fact — the camera broke. The weather was bad. The hotel was dismal. Python member Graham Chapman was suffering from alcohol withdrawal.

It got better.
