Vaccine law opponents seek statewide vote, try to recall sponsor

SACRAMENTO – After remaining the dominant issue in the state Legislature this year, the passionate debate surrounding California’s new school vaccine law is headed to street corners and grocery stores across the state. Parents who say the vaccine mandate goes too far are collecting signatures to overturn the law. Opponents are also targeting the bill’s primary author, state Sen. Richard Pan, D-Sacramento, with a recall attempt. The two separate efforts follow months of passionate debate over California’s childhood immunization requirements, which state lawmakers voted to make significantly stricter in the wake of a measles outbreak that started at Disneyland in December.
