Have you had any particularly spiritual experiences this past year? How has this experience affected you? “Spiritual” can be broadly defined to include secular spiritual experiences: artistic, cultural, and so forth.
It’s almost embarrassing to admit, but watching Pixar’s Inside Out at the cinema was one of the most moving and emotionally charged experiences in recent memory. There aren’t many films that grip me as well as this one did, and–allowing the filmmakers to take me for the ride they intended–I bawled my eyes out during one of the climactic scenes (no spoilers).
The film really touched my psyche in a way that made me reflect upon my own childhood and how my personality changed due to outside influences, even into adulthood, and it was therapeutic in a way.
Also, I had the good fortune to be able to see Polaris perform live at the Echoplex. The small venue in LA’s Echo Park neighbourhood brought me back to the early 1990s and watching The Adventures of Pete and Pete on the recliner at Granny’s house. It was great to experience the most obscure band that never existed in an intimate setting with fellow fans, bathing in the dulcet tones of Mark Mulcahy’s ringing guitar. It’s hard to find fault in Little Pete’s obsession with the band even twenty years later.
