My uncle Homer first introduced me to R. Buckminster Fuller and the Dynamaxion concept when I was very young. The idea of doing the most with the least, of sustainable development, and of “Spaceship Earth” have been some of the most defining philosophies in my life. Of course, it helps coming of age in the 1990s, when ecological responsibility was a huge push in terms of education and popular culture. Even in high school, our curriculum was defined around sustainability as an interdisciplinary concept. Bucky was a mad genius, yes, but his ideas were too far ahead of their time. The man set a precedent and the tech titans would do good to study his ideas.
He was a zany crank and a brilliant genius—today’s designers and problem solvers should think more like he did.
