Summer of 100 Photos, Day 40: Your favorite Disney character

ae preprod painting bigI dig the more obscure side of Disney, and I had a hard time choosing just one character. While Condorman, Captain Eo, the Tiki Room parrots, and Lt. Robin Crusoe (U.S.N.) are some of my favorites, there is one character that stood out in my Disney experience:

Once upon a time at Walt Disney World, there was an attraction called the ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter where a malevolent beast was conjured in the center of a theatre through an experimental teleportation technology (created by the suspiciously named “X.S. Technology Corporation”). This attraction, to me, was the pinnacle of Disney Imagineering as it was just tongue-in-cheek enough to fit in with the rest of late-1990s-era Tomorrowland, but the show itself–through its clever use of technology–was utterly terrifying. The monster “escapes” its teleportation chamber and creeps through the darkened theatre, showing only glimpses and shadows of itself. The monster sniffs at your hair and flicks its tongue at the back of your neck while you sit restrained in your seat, powerless even to stop the gruesome death of one of your “fellow park-goers” in the jaws of the alien beast. Finally, finally, handlers from X.S. Tech come in to collar the beast and save the rest of humanity! It was an amazing piece of theatre technology, and I was sad to have seen it replaced with some more family-friendly Lilo & Stitch nonsense. R.I.P. ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter Alien. You are missed.
