How to install the Insignia USB Bluetooth adapter in Windows 7

EDIT 1/16/2017: Commenter Anony Mous (haha, well done) has confirmed that the HP drivers work with the Insignia Bluetooth adapter as well. I have both the Lenovo and the HP copies of the drivers mirrored here.

EDIT 12/29/2016: Commenter Angry Dude has found a mirror for an older driver at Lenovo’s website. Give it a try for now until a proper solution is found.

EDIT 12/13/2016: It seems that Broadcom has pulled the Windows 7 driver for this device. I will investigate and update as I find more information!

This is more for future reference than anything considering it comes with paper instructions to download some software and does not come with a disc. Welcome to the future!

  1. Plug the adapter into a free USB port.
  2. Download the driver and software from
  3. Install the driver and restart the computer when finished.
  4. Profit!


  1. this doesn’t work. There is no driver on that page for windows 7 and no driver on that page will “work” on windows 7.

  2. It seems that Broadcom has pulled their Windows 7 driver suddenly (considering these comments came in in quick succession). I will investigate and update once I find something.

  4. I’m using 7 and this piece of crap has wasted so much of my time. I’m glad I found your update. At least I know their product sucks and Im not crzy!

    1. I hear you! I think it’s premature, unfair, and unnecessary to pull support for Windows 7 while it’s still within its official support cycle. I could write a much longer and fleshed-out rant, but I think that would be preaching to the choir. Once I have a little more time available, I’ll investigate this further and see if I can’t find a better solution.

      1. I’m back with a better solution, at least a better one that worked for me. It’s a bit annoying but it seems to work.

        1: Go to Device Manager
        2: Plug in USB Bluetooth Device
        3: Check Device Manager and look for your bluetooth device, which should come up as BCM20XXXXX
        4: Right Click on the BCM20702A0 in device manager and click on “update driver software”
        5: Select Browse my computer for updates
        6: Select “Let me pick from a list of Device Drivers”
        7: Pick Bluetooth devices, then select “Broadcom” on the left list of manufactures.
        8. select “BCM2033 Single”. . Driver on the right.
        9: Click Install

        1. Hello, I found this solution on another site also.

          Unfortunately, in the device manager windows gives me the “Problem” Icon (!) with the device after installing said driver. When I check on the driver, the device status is Code 43. Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems.(Code 43). I ahve tried reinstalling but nothing seems to fix this.


  6. Same issue, need driver software for Windows 7. Broadcom has informed me that they no longer support this product and referred me to Cypress who does not recognize the product number? Frustrating.

  7. It worked! I just wanted to thank you. I’m not proficient with this kind of thing and after several days of looking for solutions, downloading, deleting and trying again, I gave the HP link my last try. I was giving up after that. (I’d tried Lenovo…but it didn’t work)

    I downloaded from the HP link Anony Mous listed above. (I’m a scaredy cat and try to download from a known source. I was surprised the drivers installed because I’d had so many failures before…but here I am using my headphones, and wearing a huge, shocked, grateful grin.

    Thanks so much for posting about Broadcom’s lack of support for 7 ( I figured it was just me and user error) and providing a solution.

  11. I can’t believe Best Buy is still selling this driverless adapter. I bought it two years ago plus and could never get it to run for more than a day or so and only badly. That’s BS they’re still selling a product that was defective/unfinished without correcting it or pulling it off the market.

    1. Unfortunately, Best Buy must suffer the whims of Broadcom when it comes to these white-label adapters. At the very least, they could slap a sticker on the front that warns about the lack of support for Windows 7.

This blog saved my tail and things are working with the HP driver (although BtStackServer.exe did crash when I walked away with a connected headset on – it recovered after I closed the crash report dialog). However, I later found a thread on the Insignia support site linking to two other sources for the drivers:

    The last link is especially good as it contains a slightly newer driver( than the HP one and also hosts different versions of the Broadcom drivers released for XP to Win10 and mentions that a specific version,, is necessary when using certain devices like Bose QuietComfort 35.

  13. I kept getting a crash in BtStackServer.exe with the HP drivers, so I switched over to from the link I posted earlier. This launches a Broadcom installer that looks identical to the one launched by the HP package, but it installs newer versions of everything. The “Micro size USB to Bluetooth Dongle” driver version it installs is which is the same version that Windows Update installs. It’s dated 12/21/2015 so I doubt we’ll ever see an update to it for Win 7 at this point.

    Unfortunately, I still get crashes in BtStackServer.exe, seemingly only when I turn the headphones on or when I walk away and come back so they reconnect. Fortunately, when I close the crash dialog, the headphones still work, so the crash dialog is just an annoyance.

  14. wow, thanks so much for this! Downloaded the HP drivers for my HP laptop. Took a few tries to get it working with the dongle (had to uninstall and reinstall driver a couple times), but it finally connected to my headphones and it’s way better than the built-in BT my computer came with.
