There is a crucial link between the many great aeronautical engineers and talented mechanics that have made rotary wing flight possible and the pilots who have maximized the unique capabilities of the helicopter. This link is the helicopter test pilot. The test pilot is the one who shows what the aircraft is capable of, pushes it to define its limits and provides the feedback necessary for the engineers to refine the design.
There’s no time to waste. As a wind-driven wildfire roosts through the dry, brush-covered San Gabriel Mountains in California’s Angeles National Forest, a Sikorsky S-70A Firehawk dives towards the nearest body of water, like an eagle chasing its prey. It’s one of seven aircraft dispatched to the scene by the Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACoFD).
I was flying as copilot for Ian MacPhail in a Bell 412EP over the Arabian Gulf one bright and sunny day at 300 feet en route to an oil rig, when keyed the floor mic button and asked him, “Ian, how would you describe a helicopter pilot’s personality?” …He took a moment to think about it, then looking over at me with a smile said, “Perpetual adolescence.”
